On June 14th, 1497, 21 year old Giovanni Borgia is murdered. Just a week before, Juan had been named Duke of Benevento. Earlier that night, Juan had attended a party at his mother, Vanozza de' Cattanei's villa near San Martino ai Monti. It was meant to be a farewell party for Juan's brother Cesare, as the next day Cesare was supposed to head for Naples as a papal legate. As Cesare and Juan were riding back to Rome, at nightfall, he decided to go off on his own.
